Design Story

A large violet and umber spider sits at the exact centre of the mat, holding a needle above a draped quilt of stars, bats and a pumpkin motif. Its legs radiate outward in near symmetry, forming the compositional spine of the piece. Around it, the scene builds in tiers: spools of thread, a pincushion bristling with pins, scissors, a dress form, and stacked books lettered COSTUMES, SPELLS, STITCHES. A skull cartouche crowns the upper border, oval spider medallions anchor the sides, and a scalloped rope-like border closes the shape. The rendered texture reads as raised stitching throughout, which flattens the palette into muted purple, rust and bone. Stillness, not menace, is the mood — the tension sits in the poised needle.
